New York Nursing Homes
The state of New York offers hundreds of nursing home and skilled nursing facility options for individuals searching for long-term care facilities. Traditional nursing homes offer constant support and supervision for their residents, helping them maintain personal care and daily routines. Skilled nursing facilities offer similar support to nursing homes, but also offer medical treatments on-site under the supervision of specialized medical physicians among their home staff of medical workers. The federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) also partner with the New York State Health Department to offer information on Special Focus Facilities (SFF), which have received negative reports against standards set both federally and locally. The average cost of residence in a New York nursing home ranges from $11000 to $14000 per month, slightly more expensive than the cost of neighboring New Jersey. Family members interested in a particular long-term care facility should consider visiting the home to see if it fits their loved one’s needs.
Nursing Home Safety
Among New York State's many coronavirus patients were several nursing home residents. The number of people affected and the number of deaths specific to nursing home communities have impacted nursing home safety in ways that will likely not be matched for a long time. With the rapid expansion of the virus from early March to late April, Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the Cuomo Administration worked with hospitals and nursing homes alike to help their elderly patients. Though this crisis impacted nursing homes across the United States, it was the worst in New York. It is likely that the Centers for Disease Control will alter the state's home admission or safety protocols in light of these events.
