Brereton Manor

Brereton Manor is a 25-bed personal care facility in Washington Boro, Pennsylvania, about three miles west of Millersville and near Lancaster. The community was founded by owner Bill Boyd, who designed it after placing his own parents in senior care and finding most facilities institutional. The building is arranged to feel residential rather than institutional—residents live in bedrooms distributed throughout common areas including a living room, TV room, dining room, and kitchen, rather than in a large complex with long hallways.

The facility operates with a 1-to-1 staff-to-resident ratio, including licensed practical nurses and trained caregivers. A physician and registered nurse are on call, and the community coordinates additional services including physical therapy, occupational therapy, dermatology, podiatry, and hospice as needed. Meals are prepared on-site and sourced from local farms.

The six-acre grounds include walking paths, garden space, and a horse farm; residents may arrange visits with the horses. Brereton Manor accepts residents needing personal care, assisted living, rehabilitation, and skilled nursing, and states it works to keep residents on-site as their care needs change rather than requiring transfer to another facility. The community encourages residents to participate in social activities and maintain independence where possible.
