Pay attention to what people actually say, not what sounds good. If three reviews mention medication mix-ups, that's worth taking seriously.

Visit the shortlisted communities

Visit in person. Eat a meal there. Talk to residents without staff present. Walk the halls at different times of day. Does it smell clean? Are people engaged or sitting alone? How do staff respond when you ask questions? Trust your gut—if something feels off, it probably is.

Ask about costs upfront and in detail. Senior living facilities have wide price ranges and hidden fees are common. Get a written breakdown of what's included in the base cost and what costs extra. Ask what happens if you need more care—does the cost go up, and by how much?

Review the contract

Before you sign anything, read the contract closely. Look especially at the fine print about what happens if you need to leave, what care is included versus what's additional, and how disputes are handled. If something is unclear, ask. 7. What is the total cost, including all fees?
8. Do you understand the contract terms, especially around care upgrades and exit policies?
9. Have you had a lawyer or financial advisor review the contract if needed?
10. After weighing all of this, does this feel like the right place?

Take your time with this decision. The right fit depends on your specific situation, not on marketing or what worked for someone else.
