Hair Loss - Male Pattern Baldness
Going Bald – Our hair actually acts as a “buffer”, protecting us from the environment, assisting in the dissipation of body heat (to keep our temperature normal) and helps act as a barricade against infection. Evidence suggests that hair loss may be mainly caused by dihydrotestosterone, or DHT; a potent hormone that is closely related…

Hair protects us from the environment, helps release body heat, and guards against infection. As we age, hair loss becomes more common.
Hair loss is often caused by dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone derived from testosterone. Hair grows from follicles in the skin's outer layer. You're born with about 100,000 scalp follicles.
This number stays roughly constant throughout life. But if you're genetically prone to thinning hair or baldness (androgenetic alopecia, or AGA), DHT can shrink your scalp follicles. When this happens, they produce short, fine, colorless hair or stop producing hair altogether, instead of the thick pigmented strands you're used to. About half of all people—men and women—experience AGA by age 50.
Damaged hair follicles can sometimes be treated. Finasteride, a prescription drug, may slow or reverse follicle shrinkage by blocking the enzyme that converts testosterone into DHT. The New England Journal of Medicine reviewed its effectiveness. But it comes with side effects.
Women who are pregnant or could become pregnant should avoid finasteride entirely—it can cause birth defects in male fetuses. In men, it can lower libido and cause erectile dysfunction.
Hair transplants and scalp reduction surgery are more invasive options. Many people turn to natural remedies instead.
Natural herbs for hair health
Herbs have been used for centuries to treat hair loss. Some of the most studied include:
- Saw palmetto blocks DHT from damaging hair follicles and is used to treat benign prostate enlargement. It can help prevent hair loss in both men and women.
- Fo-Ti is a Chinese herb traditionally used to slow hair loss and graying. It's thought to promote new hair growth.
- MSM is an organic sulfur compound. Sulfur may support hair growth and keep skin soft and supple.
- L-Cysteine strengthens hair and nails and may help keep skin firm and elastic.
- L-Methionine is an essential amino acid and another source of organic sulfur. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein, which your body needs for healthy hair, skin, and nails.
- Gelatin nourishes the hair shaft and nails, giving them strength and shine.
- Biotin is used worldwide to support thick hair growth, soft skin, and healthy nails.
- Horsetail contains silica, which supports healthy nail growth and shine.
- Vitamin C supports collagen production. Your body needs collagen for skin, bones, teeth, and gums.
