Hospice is medical care focused on comfort and quality of life when a curative approach is no longer the goal. It's covered by Medicare and most private insurance, available in any setting (home, assisted living, nursing home, freestanding hospice house), and dramatically underused: most patients enroll in their final two weeks of life when they could have had months of better-controlled symptoms and more time at home. Our hospice library walks through eligibility (the six-month prognosis question, the medical certification), what hospice actually provides (medical equipment, medications, nursing visits, aides, social work, chaplaincy, bereavement support), and what it's like for the family.
We also cover the harder topics: how to talk about hospice with a parent who isn't ready, what "comfort care" choices look like in practice, and what to expect in the last days.
